غَلَبَovercame الْوَجْدُpassion عَلَيْهِover him فَبَكَىso he wept
وَتَوَلَّىand turned away الصَّبْرُpatience عَنْهُfrom him فَشَكَاso he complained
Passion overcame him, and he wept.
Passion overcame him, so he wept
And patience turned away from him, so he complained.
Patience deserted him, so he complained
وَتَمَنَّىand he wished for نَظْرَةًa glance يَشْفِيto heal بِهَاwith it
عِلَّةَthe sickness الشَّوْقِof longing فَكَانَتْso it became مَهْلَكَاruin
And he wished for a glance with which to heal
He wished for a glance to cure
the sickness of longing, but it became his ruin.
The illness of yearning, but it was fatal
يَاOh لَهَاfor it مِنْof نَظْرَةٍa glance مَاnot قَارَبَتْit approached
مَهْبِطَthe seat الْحِكْمَةِof wisdom حَتَّىuntil انْهَتَكَاit was laid bare
Oh, what a glance! No sooner had it approached
What a glance! It did not approach
the seat of wisdom than it was laid bare.
The place of wisdom until it was ravaged
نَظْرَةٌa glance ضَمَّhe closed عَلَيْهَاover it هُدْبَهُhis lashes
ثُمَّthen أَغْرَاهَاhe urged it on فَكَانَتْso it became شَرَكَاa snare
A glance over which he closed his lashes,
A glance that drew its trap for me
then urged it on, and it became a snare.
Then seduced me, so it was my partner
غَرَسَتْit planted فِيin الْقَلْبِthe heart مِنِّيof mine حُبَّهُlove for him
وَسَقَتْهُand watered it أَدْمُعِيmy tears حَتَّىuntil زَكَاit flourished
It planted love for him in my heart,
It planted its love in my heart
and my tears watered it until it flourished.
And watered it with my tears until it flourished
آهِAh مِنْfrom بَرْحِthe torment الْهَوَىof love إِنَّindeed لَهُit has
بَيْنَbetween جَنْبَيَّmy two sides مِنَof النَّارِfire ذَكَاa blaze
Ah, the torment of love! Indeed, it has
Oh, the misery of passionate love! For it
between my ribs a blaze of fire.
Has lit a fire inside me
كَانَhad أَبْقَىleft الْوَجْدُpassion مِنِّيof me رَمَقاًa remnant of life
فَاحْتَوَىthen took possession الْبَيْنُseparation عَلَىof مَاwhat تَرَكَاit had left
Passion had left me a last remnant of life,
Passion was more lasting for me than life
then separation took possession of what it had left.
So separation contained what was left
إِنَّindeed طَرْفِيmy gaze غَرَّdeceived قَلْبِيmy heart فَمَضَىso it went
فِيon سَبِيلِthe path الشَّوْقِof longing حَتَّىuntil هَلَكَاit perished
Indeed, my gaze deceived my heart, and it went
My eyes misled my heart so it passed away
on the path of longing until it perished.
On the path of passion until it perished
قَدْalready تَوَلَّىwent away إِثْرَafter غِزْلانِthe gazelles النَّقَاof the sand dunes
لَيْتَwould that شِعْرِيmy knowledge أَيَّwhich وَادٍvalley سَلَكَاit took
It has gone away after the gazelles of the sand dunes;
It followed the locks of the beautiful gazelle
would that I knew which valley it took!
If only I knew which valley they roamed
لَمْnot يَعُدْreturned بَعْدُyet وَظَنِّيand my supposition أَنَّهُthat it
لَجَّpersisted stubbornly فِيin نَيْلِattaining الْمُنَىwishes فَارْتَبَكَاso it became entangled
It has not yet returned, and I suspect that it
It no longer returns, and I think it
persisted in seeking its wishes and became entangled.
Was tangled in attaining wishes and confused
وَيْحَalas for قَلْبِيmy heart مِنْbecause of غَرِيمٍa debtor مَاطِلٍstalling
كُلَّمَاwhenever جَدَّدَhe renewed وَعْدَاًa promise أَفَكَاhe lied
Alas for my heart because of a stalling debtor:
Woe to my heart from a promising betrayer
whenever he renews a promise, he lies.
Who breaks his promise whenever he makes one
ظَنَّhe thought بِيof me سُوءاًill وَقَدْand already سَاوَمْتُهُI bargained with him
قُبْلَةًa kiss فَازْوَرَّso he turned away حَتَّىuntil فَرِكَاhe grew to hate
He thought ill of me when I had bargained with him for
He suspected me wrongly though I had bargained with him
a kiss; he turned away until he came to loathe me.
A kiss, so he was dishonest until he withdrew
فَاغْتَفِرْهَاso forgive it زَلَّةًa lapse مِنْfrom خَاطِئٍone who erred
لَمْnot يَكُنْhe had بِاللهِwith God يَوْمَاًever أَشْرَكَاassociated partners
So forgive it as a lapse by one who erred,
Forgive it as a mistake from a sinner
who has never once associated partners with God.
Who never associated any with Allah
يَاO غَزَالاًa gazelle نَصَبَتْset up أَهْدَابُهُhis lashes
بِيَدِwith the hand of السِّحْرِmagic لِضَمِّيto enfold me شَبَكَاa net
O gazelle whose lashes have set
O gazelle whose languishing glance
with magic's hand, a net to enfold me!
My heart was ensnared by sorcery to capture it
قَدْindeed مَلَكْتَyou have possessed الْقَلْبَthe heart فَاسْتَوْصِso take good care بِهِof it
إِنَّهُindeed it is حَقٌّa duty عَلَىupon مَنْwhoever مَلَكَاhas possessed
You have possessed my heart, so take good care of it;
You have won over the heart so take care of it
indeed, that is a duty upon whoever possesses it.
For it is a right against whoever possesses it
لاdo not تُعَذِّبْهُtorment it عَلَىfor طَاعَتِهِits obedience
بَعْدَafter مَاthat تَيَّمْتَهُyou enslaved it with love فَهْوَso it is لَكَاyours
Do not torment it for its obedience,
Do not torment it for obeying you
after enslaving it with love, for it is yours.
After you made it an orphan, so it is yours
غَلَبَovercame الْيَأْسُdespair عَلَىover حُسْنِthe beauty الْمُنَىof hopes
فِيكَin you وَاسْتَوْلَىand prevailed عَلَىover الضِّحْكِlaughter الْبُكَاweeping
Despair has overcome the fair hopes
Despair of wishing well overcame me
in you, and weeping has conquered laughter.
And crying took over laughter
فَإِلَىso to مَنْwhom أَشْتَكِيI complain مَاwhat شَفَّنِيhas worn me thin
مِنْfrom غَرَامٍpassion وَإِلَيْكَand to you الْمُشْتَكَىthe complaint
So to whom shall I complain of my wasting away
So to whom can I complain of the love
from passion, when my complaint is addressed to you?
That distressed me, while you are the one I complain to
سَلَكَتْfollowed نَفْسِيmy soul سَبِيلاًa path فِيin الْهَوَىlove
لَمْnot تَدَعْit left فِيهِon it لِغَيْرِيfor anyone but me مَسْلَكَاa passage
My soul has followed a path in love
My soul took a path in passion
on which it has left no passage for anyone else.
And left no other path for anyone else
