خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends مَاno فِيin الدَّهْرِlife أَطْوَلُmore lasting حَسْرَةًregret
خَلِيلَيَّ مَا فِي الدَّهْرِ أَطْوَلُ حَسْرَةً
مِنَthan الْمَرْءِthe man يَلْقَىfinds فُرْصَةًan opportunity فَيَخِيمُthen shrinks back
مِنَ الْمَرْءِ يَلْقَى فُرْصَةً فَيَخِيمُ
My two friends, no regret in life is more lasting
My friend, nothing in life is longer than regret
than that of a man who finds an opportunity, then shrinks back.
For one who finds a chance yet fails to seize it.
وَإِنَّand indeed امْرَءاًa man يَلْقَىfinds فَوَاضِلَabundant bounties نِعْمَةٍa blessing
وَإِنَّ امْرَءاً يَلْقَى فَوَاضِلَ نِعْمَةٍ
بِأَرْضٍin a land وَيَنْوِيand intends غَيْرَهَاanother land besides it لَمُلِيمُis surely blameworthy
بِأَرْضٍ وَيَنْوِي غَيْرَهَا لَمُلِيمُ
And indeed, a man who finds abundant blessings
A man may find true blessings come his way,
in a land, yet sets his mind on another, is surely blameworthy.
Yet elsewhere set his sights, and so will grieve.
