لَعَمْرُكَby your life مَاnot يُدْعَىis called الْفَتَىthe young man بَيْنَamong قَوْمِهِhis people
بِذِيas one possessing كَرَمٍgenerosity حَتَّىuntil يَكُونَhe is كَرِيمَاgenerous
By your life, a young man is not called among his people
By your life, a young man is not called generous among his people
a man of generosity until he is generous.
Unless he is truly generous.
وَلَنْand will not يَلْبَثَtake long الْمَرْءُthe man الضَّنِينُstingy بِمَالِهِwith his wealth
إِذَاif خَافَhe fears غُرْمَاًa financial loss أَنْto يُعَدَّbe deemed لَئِيمَاignoble
And the man who is stingy with his wealth will soon,
The miserly man will not keep his wealth for long
if he fears a loss, be deemed ignoble.
If he fears loss, he will be called miserable.
فَلَيْسَfor, is not الْفَتَىthe noble man مَنْone who حَازَacquired مَالاًwealth وَإِنَّمَاbut rather
فَتَىthe noble man الْقَوْمِof the people مَنْone whom أَغْنَتْenriched يَدَاهُhis two hands عَدِيمَاa pauper
For a noble man is not one who has acquired wealth; rather,
The young man is not one who has acquired wealth, but rather
his people's noble man is one whose hands have enriched a pauper.
The young man of the people is one whose hands have enriched the destitute.
فَمِزْso distinguish بَيْنَamong مَاwhat تَخْتَارُyou choose فِيin الْفِعْلِaction وَالْتَمِسْand seek
لِنَفْسِكَfor yourself حَظّاًa share كَيْso that تَكُونَyou become عَظِيمَاgreat
So distinguish among the deeds you choose, and seek
So distinguish between what you choose to do, and seek
a share for yourself, so that you may become great.
For yourself a share, that you may become great.
