أَأعسفُshall I wander blindly? فيin ظلماءِdarkness ظُلمِinjustice عَواذليmy reproachers
وَبهجةِand the radiance وجهِface الحبّlove وجهةdestination مهجتيmy soul
Shall I wander blindly in the darkness of my reproachers’ injustice,
Shall I be violent in the darkness of oppressors' injustice,
when the radiance of love’s face is my soul’s destination?
And the joy of the beloved's face is my destination?
يَملّونthey grow weary يُملونَthey dictate الملامَreproach وقَصدهمand their aim
ملاليmy weariness وآماليand my hopes بهاwith her قدalready تحلّتِhave been adorned
They grow weary as they dictate reproach, and their aim is
They blame and blame my blame, and their intention
my weariness—yet my hopes have already been adorned with her.
Is my boredom and my hopes in it have been adorned.
تَجلّتshe revealed herself فَجلّتso she dispelled عَنfrom جَنانيmy heart جنونهمtheir madness
وماand not جُنّتيmy shield مِنagainst جِنّتيmy madness غَيرother than جَنّتيmy paradise
She revealed herself, and so dispelled their madness from my heart.
Their madness was revealed, so it was revealed from my gardens
And my only shield against my madness is my paradise.
And my gardens were not from my gardens but my gardens
وَحيّتand she greeted وَماwhile not فيin الحيّthe camp حيٌّa living soul فَماso not الحياrain
بِأسرعَany swifter مِنthan إحيائهاher reviving كلَّevery ميِّتِdead one
And she offered a greeting when none in the camp was alive; so rain is not
I lived and there is no life in life so what is life
any swifter than she at bringing every dead soul to life.
Quicker than reviving every dead one
