emerged from al-Shidyaq’s bombast!
Apparent from the pretense of the ardent
ظنّthought شيطانُthe demon طبعهِhis nature شُهُبَthe shooting stars الآthe litera- (word continues)

دابِ-ture (completing 'literature') زالَتhad vanished فَحامso he hovered حولaround اِستراقِstealing a hearing

The demon of his nature thought the shooting stars of litera-
The devil of his nature thought stars of verse
ture had vanished, so he hovered about, seeking to steal a hearing.
