O You who bestow favors on all creation before they ask,
O Bestower before asking throughout the earth
O You to whom complaint is brought when calamity strikes,
O You to Whom complaint is due when misfortunes occur
ياO مُكرماًone who honors لِعبادهِfor His servants بثوابهِwith His reward
ياO آمراًone who commands للمُبتلىto the afflicted أَنto يَصبراbe patient
O You who honor Your servants with Your reward,
O Honoror of Your servants with Your reward
O You who command the afflicted to be patient,
O Commander to the afflicted to show patience

Your trial veils hearts from all besides You;
Your tribulations are veils to hearts from sincerity
thus it is bliss, and deserves gratitude.
For they are bliss and their way is to be thanked
لَولاwere it not for اِدّعائيmy claim أنthat يقاومَwithstand بَطشهاits force

لَسَألتI would ask جهديwith all my might أنthat تَزيدit increase وَتكثراand multiply
Were it not presumptuous to claim I could withstand its force,
Were it not for my claim to resist their violence
I would ask with all my might that it increase and multiply.
I would have asked my effort to increase and multiply
لَكنّbut مَعرِفتيmy knowledge بِقدريof my limits أوجَبَتhas compelled

But knowing my own limits has compelled me
But my knowing my status necessitated
to lament my weakness and my inability to endure.
That I complain of my weakness, that I cannot endure
فَالصبرُso patience يُلجِمنيreins me in عَنِfrom الشكوىcomplaint رضاًout of contentment

So patience reins me back from complaint, out of contentment
So patience silences me from complaining, pleased
with You, while my condition never ceases to speak.
With You, and my state does not cease to inform

إِنif أوحَشتbrings loneliness ظلمُthe darkness البلاof affliction أَنto أذكراI remember
Remembering You spares me the need to ask; my solace,
Remembering You suffices me from asking, so my companion
if affliction's darkness brings loneliness, is to remember You.
If the injustice of tribulation makes me lonely, is to remember

Whenever I remember You while calamities obscure
No sooner do I remember You and tribulations misguide
the path of reason, that path becomes clear to see.
The path of prohibition, except it sees at dawn

My remembrance suffices me: with His name, no harm can come
Enough for me is remembering You; with His name
from anything; that is my shield against fear.
Nothing harms, and that is my protection to be wary
أَشهدتَنيYou made me witness اللّهمّO God فَضلكYour bounty عاجلاًwithout delay
مِثلَlike الّذيthat which أشهدتنيYou made me witness أَنthat تقهراYou subdue
You have shown me Your bounty, O God, without delay,
You have shown me, O God, Your grace readily
just as You have shown me Your power to subdue.
Similar to that which You have shown me to overwhelm

Do not test me with afflictions, for I
Do not test me with afflictions, I
flee from them to You until they retreat.
Flee from them to You until You consider

I am in Your sanctuary, keeping company with remembrance of You, seeking refuge
I am under Your protection, a companion in remembering You, seeking refuge
in Your gracious kindness—how could I fear anything dreadful?
In the beauty of Your kindness, how could I fear harm?

From the sea of Your bounty, You have accustomed me to a watering place,
Your sea of grace has accustomed me to a spring
clear and pure; so protect my watering place from growing turbid.
Pure, so protect my spring from becoming turbid.
