I spend my days between rejection and desertion,

Two allies in cutting off my hopes and patience.

Love and separation: this destroys my heart,

And that joins the eyelid’s tears in shedding its blood.

I long for sleep, so that your apparition may visit me,

Yet separation insists on keeping my eyelids apart.

So, O tears of my eyelids, and O heat within my ribs,

Do you two truly have no pity for my sorrows?

I marveled—by God—at how you two joined forces,

Yet you two are, for all time, nothing but opposites.
