    A lover who attained his wish is a tale of the phoenix,

    or one who sought to forget his love for the one who stirred his longing—and forgot.

    I do not count union my lot in passionate love; rather,

    my share of beauty is to be one of those slain.

    Truly, the reproachers gave sound counsel—if only they had accepted it!

    And many a piece of advice, to one's dismay, has gone unheeded.

    If precedence may be awarded to one who leaves a mark,

    then the sword of Musa's glance outstrips reproach.

    وَحيلةُ المُبتلى أَن يتركَ الحيَلا

    In my love for him, I sought a means of healing;

    and the sufferer's stratagem is to abandon stratagems.

    فَنصّ لي لحظهُ الأمراضَ والعِللا

    I hoped for his tenderness in the moment of my sickness;

    but his glance prescribed me diseases and ailments.

    O you, every hopeful word concerning you has become

    'Yes,' though in love's interpretation its meaning is 'No.'

    My prose has become consolation without attainment:

    'Perhaps' and 'if only'; and all my poetry is love verse.

    In waking life you denied me a greeting in return, so I did not

    hope ever to complain to you of some of what befell me.

    In vain! I had hoped for sleep, that perhaps I might

    dare to demand kisses from the dream-phantom.

    يَزيدُ جدّته جِسمي بلى وبلا

    The dye of pallor from wasting sickness clothed my body;

    its freshness increases my body's decay and affliction.

    His eyes dye it deeply, and you would think

    that if it were sprinkled with water, it would not fade.

    أَعادَني بينَ أربابِ الهوى مثلا

    My longing for you—may you never bear my longing!—has already

    made me a byword among the masters of love;

    it has consumed my endurance, my body, and my heart, just as

    it has exhausted rhymes, and exhausted tears and stratagems.
