إلهيmy God ذُنوبيmy sins ماwhat علمتYou know وَإِنّنيand indeed I
لأخشىI surely fear وَأَرجوand I hope والرجاءand hope أغلبُstronger
My God, my sins are as You know, and I
Do fear and hope, though hope prevails.
وَماand not كانَwas ماwhat قَدalready كانhappened منّيfrom me تَجرّؤاًdefiance
ولكنbut غُروراًdelusion والبوارقand lightning flashes خلّبُrainless
What I have done was not out of defiance,
But out of delusion—lightning can flash without rain.
وَلَولاand were it not for رجائيmy hope كدتI nearly أفنىperish مخافةًfrom fear
وَلُطفكand Your kindness لولاهُwere it not for it لماwould not لاحappear مذهبُa way out
But for my hope, I would almost perish from fear;
And Your kindness—without it, no way out would appear.
إِليكto You زَمانيmy times أَشتكيهI complain of it وأهلهand its people
فَلَمso not يبقَremains ليfor me منهمfrom them لغيركto anyone besides You مهربُan escape
To You I complain of my times and their people;
No escape from them remains for me except to You.
وَإِنّيand indeed I بدارin a household لاnot أذمّI blame كبارهاits elders
ولكنbut فيamong الأطفالthe children منone who لاnot يهذّبُis disciplined
I am in a household whose elders I do not blame,
But some of its children are undisciplined.
أُشاهدI witness منهمfrom them ماwhat يشقّtears مرائريmy innards
وأسمعهand I hear it حتّىuntil كأنّيَas though I مذنبُguilty
I see in them what tears my innards,
And hear it, until I seem the guilty one.
فواللّهso, by God لولاwere it not for رَغبتيmy attachment فيto أبيهمُtheir father
I would surely have gone east فيin أَرضِthe land of البلادthe country وغَرّبواand they would have gone west
By God, were it not for my attachment to their father,
I would have gone east across the land, and they west.
وَكلّand every مقامٍstay يورثbreeds الذلَّhumiliation إنif يطُلit grows long
وَكلّand every اِرتِحالٍdeparture فيin اِقتناacquiring العزّhonor طيّبُpleasant
Every stay breeds humiliation if prolonged,
And every journey in pursuit of honor is welcome.
وَأعذرهمand I excuse them جهديas best I can وَأَرجوand I hope for صَلاحَهمtheir improvement
وَماand none منهمof them إلّاexcept لديَّwith me مقرّبُheld close
I excuse them as best I can and hope they mend their ways;
And there is not one of them I do not hold dear.
أراهمُI regard them إِخوانيmy brothers لحقّbecause of the claim أبيهمof their father
عليّupon me ولكنbut ليسthere is no فيهمamong them تأدّبُgood manners
I regard them as my brothers, for their father's claim
Upon me; yet they have no manners.
سَمعتُI heard لعمريby my life منهمfrom them كلّevery فاحشٍobscenity
وَأَغضيتand I overlooked it حتّىuntil قوّلواthey falsely ascribed words وتكذّبواand they lied
By my life, I have heard every obscenity from them,
And turned a blind eye, until they put words in my mouth and lied.
إِذاwhen ماever اِشتكواthey complain منّيabout me فإنّيَthen indeed I عالمٌaware
بأنof the fact that الّذيthe one who يصغيlistens إليهمto them مجرّبُexperienced
When they complain of me, I know
That the one who listens to them is experienced,
وَأَنّand that الّذيthe one who أغرىincited الصغيرthe little one وغرّهand deceived him

And that the one who incited the little one and deceived him
Was his brother; so he fell to weeping and sobbing.

He taught him to curse me, and he did; this is what
By my life, I have always sought to avoid.
فَمهلاًso, gently! عبادَservants of اللّهِGod إنif كانthere is منكمamong you
رضىapproval بالّذيof what قدalready كانhappened فالأمرthen the matter أعجبُmore astonishing
Hold, servants of God! If among you there is
Approval of what has happened, that is stranger still.
إِذاif ماever سَئِمتمyou have tired أنthat أقيمَI stay فإنّنيthen indeed I
أهشّI brighten لعمريby my life للرحيلat departure وأطربُand I rejoice
If you have tired of my staying, then I
Welcome departure, by my life, and rejoice.
وَماand not رَغبةturning away عنكمfrom you ولكنbut عنfrom الأذىharm
وَفيand on الأرضearth أنّىwherever سرتI travel أهلٌkinfolk ومرحبُand a welcome
It is not you I shun, but the harm;
And wherever on earth I go, there are kin and a welcome.
وَماand not بيَin me عجزٌinability عنto بلوغattain مآربيmy aims
ولكنّنيbut I عنfrom موقفa station الذلّhumiliation أرغبُI turn away
I am not powerless to attain my aims,
But I shun a station of humiliation.

You will hear of my noble deeds if I go far away,
Whose excellence fair praise now proclaims.
وَكمand many a قائلٍspeaker إنّاindeed we عَهدناهwe knew him صادقاًtruthful
وَآخرand another يغضيturns a blind eye عنto قذىgrit in the eye ويكذّبُand disbelieves
And many say, 'We knew him to be truthful,'
While another shuts his eyes to grit and disbelieves.
وَأحزَمهمand their most prudent منthe one who قالsaid لمnot أبلI test أمرهhis character
علىdespite أنّthe fact that أمريmy conduct ماnot بلونيthey tested me معيّبُjudged faulty
The most prudent of them says, 'I have not tested his character,'
Yet my conduct is judged faulty, though they have not tested me.
بصيرونkeen-sighted لكنbut بِاِلتماسِin seeking مَعائبيmy faults
وَإنّand indeed اِلتماسseeking العيبfault منهthan it لأعيبُsurely more blameworthy
They are keen-sighted, but only in seeking my faults,
And seeking a fault is worse than the fault itself.
وَصعبٌand difficult بقاءٌstaying وَاِصطبارٌand patient endurance علىof الأذىharm
وَلكنbut خلاصيmy escape منهfrom it أَنكىmore painful وأصعبُand harder
It is hard to stay and patiently endure harm,
But my escape from it is more painful and harder.
وَأصعبand the hardest ماwhat لاقيتI have faced خطبٌa plight زوالهits removal
علىdespite أنّهits being سهلeasy منthan الخطبthe plight أصعبُharder
The hardest thing I have faced is a plight whose removal,
Though it is easy, is harder than the plight itself.
