وَضعتُI laid down سِلاحَthe weapon الصبرِof patience عنهagainst him فماso what لهis the matter with him
يُحرّقُhe scorches أَحشائيmy innards وهنَّthough they مَنازِلهhis dwellings
I laid down patience’s weapon against him; why does he
scorch my innards, though they are his dwellings?
وَأَسلمتُand I surrendered نَفسيmyself فيinto يديهِhis hands فَلِمso why غَداhas he begun
يُقاتلُhe fights بِالألحاظِwith glances مَنone who لاnot يُقاتِلهfights him
And I surrendered myself into his hands; why has he begun
to fight with glances one who does not fight him?
وَسالَand flowed عذارٌcheek-down فوقَover خدّيهhis cheeks جائرٌcruel
فَللّهso, by God سيفٌa sword وَازرَتهaided it حَمائِلُهits baldrics
And cruel down flowed over his cheeks—
what a sword, by God, aided by its baldrics!
أَسالَit made flow دماًblood مِنfrom مُقلتيmy eye ليسَnot مبقياًsparing
عَلىtoward مُهجَتيmy lifeblood فَليتّقso let him fear اللّهGod سائِلُهthe one seeking it
It made blood flow from my eye, sparing
not my lifeblood; let him who seeks it fear God.
