My lord, I offer to your exalted gathering
the fragrance of greeting and of the fairest praise.

After it comes fragrant supplication—pray accept
a devoted friend's prayer offered in your absence:

drawing near us with radiance and rising high.

This is my prayer; through your affection I behold
the fire of Moses in every pitch-dark night.

And in my heart is Abraham's fire, because you are far away;
so hasten the coolness of nearness through a greeting of peace.
