وَرَوضةِand many a garden حسنٍof beauty باتَspent the night يُنشِقُناmakes us inhale الصّباthe east wind
قرنفُلهاits carnations فيin خلسةِthe furtiveness of المتخجّلِone who blushes
And many a garden of beauty—the east wind spent the night making us inhale
Its carnations, with the furtiveness of one who blushes.
فَمَهماso whenever تَنسّمناwe breathed in عَلىwith غيرِno رقبةٍwatchfulness
نسيمَthe breeze of الصباthe east wind جاءَتit came بريّاwith the fragrance of القرنفلُcarnations
So whenever, unguarded, we breathed in
The east breeze, it came bearing the fragrance of carnations.
تُقبّلkiss أَنفاسيmy breaths قُرنفلَthe carnation of خدّهِhis cheek
وَتتركُand leave رَيحانَthe basil of العذارِthe sideburn المسلسلِchainlike
My breaths kiss the carnation of his cheek
And leave the basil of his chainlike sideburn.
وَماand not ذاكَthat إلّاexcept أنّهاthat they قدalready تنسّمتbreathed in
نسيمَthe breeze of الصّباthe east wind جاءَتit came بريّاwith the fragrance of القرنفلِcarnations
And that is only because they have breathed in
The east breeze, which came bearing the fragrance of carnations.
وَليand I have شاهدٌa witness أنّthat القُرنفلَthe carnation سيّدٌa master
عَلىover الوردِthe rose فيin طيبٍfragrance وحسنِand beauty of تشكّلِform
And I have a witness: the carnation is supreme
Over the rose in fragrance and beauty of form.
فَلوfor if بينَbetween وردٍa rose والقرنفلand the carnation حكّمتwas appointed judge
نَسيمُthe breeze of الصّباthe east wind جاءَتit came بريّاwith the fragrance of القرنفلِcarnations
For if the appointed judge between rose and carnation were
The east breeze, it would come bearing the fragrance of carnations.
أَغارُI am jealous عَلىover خدّيهِhis two cheeks مِنof لحظةٍa glance هَفَتstrayed
بِهاin it نظرةٌa gaze حَمقاfoolish لغيرِfor other than تأمُّلِcontemplation
I am jealous for his cheeks of a wandering glance—
A foolish gaze, without reflection.
وَأشفقُand I fear مِنof قولِthe words of المبكّرِthe early riser ناشقاًinhaling
نَسيمthe breeze of الصّباthe east wind جاءَتit came بريّاwith the fragrance of القرنفلِcarnations
And I fear the early riser's words as he inhales:
"The east breeze came bearing the fragrance of carnations."
