    I spend the night with a heart aflame with longing,

    And tears that mimic the clouds, yet they are blood.

    فَما لنسيمِ اليأسِ لا يتنسّمُ

    O our beloveds, estrangement is my lot from you;

    Why, then, does the breeze of despair not blow?

    I think my faithfulness in love will be my death,

    And my reproacher's counsel—if I saw clearly—is more prudent.

    And I marvel, though speech fills my ears,

    At its becoming unintelligible to me, as though I did not understand.

    ترقُّ وَلَكن رقّةً لَيس ترحمُ

    To God I complain of anguish and yearning

    That grows tender, yet with a tenderness that shows no mercy;

    And of a heart that, when grief begins to check it,

    Persists, calling, “My exemplars have already gone ahead.”

    And of patience that, when I seek its aid, says, “I have no

    Strength in love's war, nor any way to plunge into it.”

    O my reproacher, what have I to do with reproach over them?

    Would you, then, choose peace, which is safer?
