Awake, you beguiled by life grown serene,

and by your circle kept whole, and safety grown abundant.

For the destroyer of pleasures spares no young man,

nor is there pleasure in life while he stands on the brink.

    تَسارَعت الآجالُ فيها تخوّفا

    Hopes spread wide within a narrow life;

appointed ends hasten within it, amid dread.

So desires are left behind only without warning,

and souls are wrested away only in a sudden snatch.

Can a man be beguiled by hopes, when his fate

is the fate of the one this earth and smooth rock have enfolded?

A scion of illustrious chieftains from the house of Bayram,

stars of guidance in East and West, plain to see.

He received a lineage from glory's spacious heart,

with God as its guardian—how exalted and noble!

And he drove his efforts toward the highest aims of noble deeds,

so in them he held both inherited glory and glory newly won.

He indeed possessed sound judgment and speech

refined, and was skilled in dealing with the times.

His bearing and speech adorned the gatherings,

and captivated men's minds through affection.

He rose, and how he rose, in glory, honor, and eminence,

    and handled every affair well.

And he firmly planted affection in every heart,

which clothed him in richly patterned wealth of faith and worldly life.

And from it, since the morning of his passing, he has witnessed

prayer vying with grief and anguished longing.

So stand, O passerby, beside his tomb,

    and let this moving impression there suffice to make you pause;

and greet a noble man, saying and marking the date:

May the rain water the grave of Bayram Mustafa.
