قالت: ألَم تشتق؟ فقلتُ لها: بلى

قالت: ألَم تشتق؟ فقلتُ لها: بلى

لكنَّ لي في الشوقِ أحلى فلسفه

لكنَّ لي في الشوقِ أحلى فلسفه

She said, 'Have you not yearned?' So I said to her, 'Indeed I have.'

She asked, "Did you not yearn?" I said, "Yes,

But in longing, I have the sweetest philosophy:

But yearning has for me a sweeter philosophy:

أنأى ؛ لأظمأَ للِّقاءِ مُجدَّدًا

أنأى ؛ لأظمأَ للِّقاءِ مُجدَّدًا

فأعود أحملُ خافقي وتلهُّفَه

فأعود أحملُ خافقي وتلهُّفَه

I draw away to thirst anew for reunion,

To keep my distance, and thirst anew for the meeting,

Then I return, bearing my heart and its yearning.

That I may return with heart astir and longing afresh.
