You two, keep me away from the gulf of the Sea of the Romans,

And stop with me on the banks of the pool.

Here, the graceful maidens, radiant as stars,

Circled around the water like birds.

    They came, their chests exposed,

Then hitched up every modest hem.

    Oh, what purity in unveiling!

All purity was gathered in the countryside.

    أرأيت الدُّمى وهنَّ عوارِ؟

    They had drawn their hems away from their legs;

Have you seen the dolls, bare as they were?

And they advanced with unhurried steps,

Swaying for fear of the current.

She lifted the hem of a pitch-black robe

From rosy limbs, red as blood.

And behold, within the folds of these robes,

A twilight glow appeared beneath the wing of darkness.

And when you saw with your own eyes

The sight of legs plunged into the waves,

You said: 'A valley whose surface is silver,

Where a forest of ivory has sprung up.'

    Each slender-waisted maiden knelt,

Like the Virgin kneeling in the sanctuary.

Then she saw her face reflected in the water,

And the water saw its billows reflected in her face.

They sought to immerse their jars in the surging water,

But it resisted their immersion, coy and proud.

Then, when they won a warrior's victory,

Each jar laughed with its whole mouth.

Then they turned away, carrying the jars,

    Their necks bending beneath them.

Not out of coyness did those maidens sway:

Anything supple bends when you weigh it down.

As she walked, she lifted with her right hand

The hem of a long, light robe apt to trip her,

And, with her left hand above her brow, warded off

The sunbeams' assaults upon her eyes.

    فإذا ما صدرن سرن اتئادا

    They walked briskly on their way to the water;

But when they left it, they walked slowly.

Have you seen the male ostrich as it flees,

Or seen the sandgrouse as it saunters?

And we marveled at the women carrying jars,

Which loomed above their heads like towers.

How can she show a giant's resolve—

She whose body is like quivering quicksilver?

Those are legs burnished in the open air,

    That never swayed in stockings of silk;

And heads created to bear burdens,

Not heads accustomed to having their hair cut.

They have not grown flabby in the darkness of secluded chambers,

Or coated their skin with colors.

Rather, through their faces flowed, like pure water,

The sun's redness—the dye of the Most Merciful.

You two, ask me about the people of those haunts:

Indeed, this ground is my birthplace.

Its birds taught me my melodies,

And the air gave me my first cup to drink.

A stage where I once stood,

And on it I played the role of a boy.

    لك عندي تقديس بيت حرامِ

    Yours, O countryside, are my sigh and longing;

I revere you as I would a sacred house.
