Why do you saddle up without hesitation?

May I be your ransom, departing before your time!

Slow down, Khafif; you do not know

in your grave, what I suffer since your departure.

By your Lord, how can you meet the dead without me?

And how did He summon you there, yet not summon me?

yet they flowed for you, their reins let loose.

How can I bear to hold back my tears after you,

when I have a feeling heart and two eyes?

    فما للدمع بعدك ما شفاني؟

    They said that shedding tears brings healing;

why, then, have tears not healed me since you left?

This life is nothing but a road,

and we are two travelers upon it.

So how could you leave me alone upon the path,

when I have no strength to journey alone by night?

    Refined literature made us brothers,

so people thought we were twins.

Whenever I rejoiced, you rejoiced before me,

and you grieved whenever sorrow grieved me.

and if you were promoted, congratulations came to me.

But how, when his voice still flows

into my hearing, as songs flow?

And there is his bearing, his cheerful countenance,

and there his youth, in its full vigor?

Such are you, O world: a mirage.

God curse you! There is no safety in you!

Al-Khafif appears to me on every horizon,

and I glimpse his face at every moment.

and wonder: how can the two luminaries still appear?

without suffering what has befallen me?
