What ails Kinana, after so long a voyage,

that her ship has halted on the Heights?

Affairs have indeed become clear, yet her own plight

is dark with deepest gloom, pitch-black with shadows.

They said, 'Peace'; I said, 'Before your peace comes

the clash of keen swords and blood-dripping spears.'

By God, peace has never prevailed in a world

where the weak were denied justice.

Those who took charge of peace have decreed what

leaves peace shaken on every side.

They passed judgment, and from its first signs wafted

the smell of gushing blood to anyone who sniffed.

They threw the case into the baskets—will it be seen

on Judgment Day, the day of appeal?

Tell those whose deliberations have dragged on:

morning is not hidden from those who can see.

Why deliberate? The sun's disk does not

require a searchlight for anyone viewing it.

Kingdoms were deceived by honeyed promises,

and reaped only the bitterness of broken pledges.

Was the Atlantic Charter a tale

of fantasy, neatly woven end to end?

Egypt's case laid bare their cloak of hypocrisy—

ah, such hypocrisy, and its transparent cloak!

Our free allies, once they had brutalized

their enemies, turned against their allies.

    Seventy years under unbroken occupation—

alas for Kinana, with so many lean years!

A guest came to her, then became her master,

and violated his generous host's honor.

They said, 'The Nile is independent,' while the occupier in

its valley is carried on shoulders.

Indeed, bondage has a single taste,

even though its forms are many.

We are not free, by my life, so long as there appears

a single specter of their faces.

O sons of our father in the south, a greeting

like flowers crowned with shimmering dew.

Your kin are in Egypt, and nowhere else

    have you kin or forebears.

The Nile has joined us through its sweet water,

as drinking companions are joined around pure wine.

Brothers at one breast: nothing divides us

in status except the law of injustice.

Let no schemers deceive you with falsehood

in their words—sweet to the taste, but deadly poison.

The foreigner in our land and yours

is like a cloud in the open, clear sky.

Whoever follows the intruder is hypnotized

while awake, robbed of his will, heedless.

If the intruder's generosity beguiled him, how often

has a camel calf been slaughtered with the fodder-seller's knife!

Join rank to rank, and sharpen

the bright blades of resolve to the keenest edge.

Aspirations are like fair maidens: their way

is never to yield to the idle and weak.

    كلاَّ، ولا عدلُ القُضاة بكاف

    A just cause cannot prevail by itself;

no, nor is the judges' justice enough.

A just cause needs a vigilant champion,

    as a sword needs a swordsman's hand.

Calamities have indeed united against the homeland,

while its sons are hostage to internecine strife and discord.

What harm would it do if all forgot themselves,

and pure affection returned after estrangement!

Different factions aim at a single goal,

as though they were one book in a thousand covers.

They cried, 'Long live Zayd and Khalid!'

But I reserved my cheers for withdrawal alone!

Hero of withdrawal, may a steady rain water your tomb,

watering the gardens with a heavy, streaming shower!

Forty years have passed over you, yet still

you cling to the innermost core of every heart.

You have a life story whose chapters the young recite

like verses from Ya-Sin and Al-Ahqaf.

Surahs we chant, kindling in our blood

    what flames kindle in fibers.

Stand in the wilderness and say: 'Here lies the treasure

they buried among boulders and desert wastes.'

Stand in the wilderness and say: 'Here lies one man who,

when men are measured, is measured against thousands.'

He bore the trust alone, as though

he himself were an army corps on the march.

The humbleness of his grave does his bones no harm:

a pearl is still a pearl within its shell.

O master of martyrs, what you planted we still

water with our blood for the day of harvest.

And your patriotic legacy is in the hands of a company

neither weak in resolve nor prone to hesitation.

A band of noble men, should the homeland strive earnestly

in its search for a band of noble men.

They returned to their roots and came together,

after discord, as loving companions come together.

Each one offering his life or his wealth

to the Nile, content with a bare subsistence.

They never denied a right, nor, when they disputed

a falsehood, did they resort to vulgarity.

Neither power bowed their heads, nor

did their spear-shaft yield to the pressure of the straightening tool.

Events do not unsettle their judgment,

and they meet death with disdain.

They said, 'A treaty of glory'; you said,

'An incurable disease, not a healing remedy.'

Then, when morning dawned for those who could see,

they testified that you had hit the mark.

You grasped the hidden course of events, as though

you were reading them from a soothsayer's page.

And you kept faith with your country in

an age when faithful, trustworthy men are few.
