إذاwhen سُئِلَتshe is asked، فالجوابthen the answer الأنينmoaning!!
إذا سُئِلَت، فالجواب الأنين!!
She was stricken, and did not know how to express herself.
I am afflicted, and know not how to explain
When she is asked, her answer is a moan!
When asked, only moaning is my refrain

And when the cough besets her,
And when the cough persists, to torment me
she points to her chest with her right hand.
I point with my right hand to my chest in pain

Medicine is pressed upon her; she clamps her mouth shut:
I force myself to take medicine
weak as she is, it is an impregnable fortress.
Though weakness makes it hard to sustain

My sighs pierce through to my inner soul
doing what knives do to the aorta.
Acting like arrows shot with perfect aim

My heart escaped the arrows of nubile maidens,
My heart survived the arrows of sorrow
yet a three-year-old girl has struck it dead.
Saved by a girl of only thirteen
