شدت في وهميَ صرحًا من رجاءِ

فإذا صرحيَ تذروه الرياحْ

فإذا صرحيَ تذروه الرياحْ

I built in my fancy an edifice of hope,

In my fancy I built a palace of hope

And behold, the winds scatter my edifice.

Yet its bricks are scattered by the winds

لكأني قمت أجتاح الجبالْ

لكأني قمت أجتاح الجبالْ

أو تعلَّقتُ بأسباب القمرْ

أو تعلَّقتُ بأسباب القمرْ

It is as though I had risen to sweep away the mountains,

As if I had tried to scale mountains

Or clung to the moon's cords,

Or cling to the cause of the moon

أو طلبت النجم في وقت الزوالْ

أو طلبت النجم في وقت الزوالْ

وافتقدت الشمس في وقت السحرْ

وافتقدت الشمس في وقت السحرْ

Or sought the star at noon,

Or seek the star at noon

And looked for the sun in the hour before dawn.

Or the sun at dawn

لا، لعمري، أنا ما رمتُ محالا

لا، لعمري، أنا ما رمتُ محالا

غير أنَّ الناس في الدنيا طباعْ

غير أنَّ الناس في الدنيا طباعْ

No, by my life, I sought nothing impossible;

No, by my life, I never attempted the impossible

But people in this world have different temperaments.

Except that people in life have dispositions

كلفتني بسطة العيش ابتذالا

كلفتني بسطة العيش ابتذالا

وأديمُ الوجه غالٍ لا يباع

وأديمُ الوجه غالٍ لا يباع

The comforts of life demanded self-abasement of me,

The expanse of living made me complacent

And the skin of one's face is precious, not for sale.

And the mask of dignity is expensive, not for sale

ليس أغلى من إبائي في يديَّا

ليس أغلى من إبائي في يديَّا

فليمدَّ الدهر للباقي يديهِ

فليمدَّ الدهر للباقي يديهِ

Nothing in my hands is dearer than my self-respect;

Nothing is costlier than my refusal to extend my hands

So let Time stretch out its hands for the rest.

So let time extend its hands to the rest

أنا لا أطلب غير القوت شيئًا

أنا لا أطلب غير القوت شيئًا

وإذا ما عزَّ لا أبكي عليهِ

وإذا ما عزَّ لا أبكي عليهِ

I ask for nothing but sustenance,

I seek nothing but sustenance

And if it grows scarce, I do not weep over it.

And if deprived, I shall not lament it

ما ألذَّ العيشَ في ظل الأملْ!

ما ألذَّ العيشَ في ظل الأملْ!

فاسبحي، يا نفس، في جوِّ الخيالِ

فاسبحي، يا نفس، في جوِّ الخيالِ

How sweet life is in the shade of hope!

How sweet is living in the shade of hope!

So swim, O soul, in the air of imagination.

So swim, my soul, in the air of fantasy

لا تقولي: «ليس»، بل قولي: «لعلّ»

لا تقولي: «ليس»، بل قولي: «لعلّ»

وتعالَيْ نئدُ اليأس، تعالي

وتعالَيْ نئدُ اليأس، تعالي

Do not say, 'It is not'; rather, say, 'Perhaps.'

Say not "it is not," but say "perhaps"

And come, let us bury despair alive—come!

And rise above despair, rise above
