يكادُalmost يُنَاجِيكَwhispers to you بنيانُهاits buildings!
My brother, what is the matter with this land?
My brother, what is the matter with this land?
Its buildings almost whisper to you!
Its buildings seem to converse with you!
تكادُalmost لفَرْطَfrom the intensity of أسَاهاits grief تفيضُoverflow

From the intensity of its grief, they almost overflow—
It almost overflows with sadness -
its pools—with tears, not water!
With tears, not water, pouring out!
بِرَبِّكby your Lord: هلhas فَقَدتْit lost أهلَهَاits people
فزادتْso grew علىover الأهلthe people أحْزَانُهاits sorrows؟
By your Lord, has it lost its people,
By your Lord - has it lost its people
so that its sorrows for its people have grown?
So that sorrow exceeds the people?
لقدindeed حلَّهَاsettled in it غيرُother than سُكَّانهاits inhabitants
وعنهاand from it تَرَحَّلَdeparted سُكَّانُهاits inhabitants
Indeed, people other than its inhabitants have settled there,
Those not its people have settled it
and its inhabitants have departed from it.
And its people have moved away from it.
علىat بابهاits gate صاحcried out طَيْرٌa bird غريبٌforeign
فَنَاحَso wailed علىfor طْيرهtheir bird بَانُهاits bān trees (moringa)!
At its gate a foreign bird cried out,
A strange bird cried out at its door
so its bān trees wailed for their bird!
So its mate lamented for it!
إذاwhenever ذُكرare mentioned العُرْبُthe Arabs؛ حنَّتْit yearns، وأنَّتْand moans

Whenever the Arabs are mentioned, it yearns and moans,
When the Arabs are remembered, it yearns, regrets,
and begins waving its branches!
And its branches wave farewell!
وصاحتand cries out تُهيبُappealing بجيرانهَاto its neighbors
فهلso, have سَمعَheard الصَّوْتَthe call جيرانُهاits neighbors؟
And it cries out, appealing to its neighbors—
It calls out, warning its neighbors -
so have its neighbors heard the call?
But did its neighbors hear the call?
فلَسْطِينُPalestine، أرضُthe land العُرُبةof Arabhood عَيْنٌan eye
وأنتِand you منof العَيْنthe eye إِنْسَانُهاits pupil
Palestine, the Arab homeland is an eye,
Palestine, the Arabs' own land,
and you are the pupil of that eye.
You are the person of their eye!
فلاso may not غَمَضَتْclose عنكto you عينُthe eye فتَاكِof your young man

So may your young man's eye never close to you,
Neither has the eye of your hero blinked toward you
nor its eyelids ever taste sleep,
Nor have his eyelids known sleep,
إلىuntil أنthat أُقَبِّلI kiss أرضَكِyour soil سَبْعًاseven times
فتهدأand then grows calm نفسيmy soul وأشجانُهاand its sorrows
until I kiss your soil seven times,
Until I kiss your earth seven times,
and then my soul and its sorrows grow calm.
Calming my soul and its sorrows.
فإنfor if عشتI live، تخْمُدْwill die down بقلبيin my heart حقودٌgrudges

For if I live, grudges in my heart will die down,
If I live, grudges smoldering in my heart
whose fires blaze within the heart.
Will flare up in it.
وإنand if متُّI die، لمwill not تُنسنيكِmake me forget you الجنانُParadise's gardens

And if I die, the gardens of Paradise will not make me forget you,
If I die, Paradise and its houri,
nor Paradise's houris and its youths.
Its boys will not make me forget you.
وَخَلْفيand behind me لِثأريfor my vengeance وثَأرand the vengeance of بلاديmy homeland
أُسُودُthe lions الحُرُوبof wars وفُرْسانُهاand their horsemen
And behind me, to avenge me and my homeland,
After me, to avenge me and avenge my country,
are the lions of war and its horsemen.
Are its knights and steeds of war!

When the pages of heroism are written,
If the pages of heroism are written,
then Arabhood is indeed their heading.
The Arabness is their title.

And Arabhood's faith, after God
After God, the religion of Arabness
and after the prophets, is its homelands.
Is its prophets and its homelands.

Palestine, our precious souls—
Palestine - our souls, however dear,
at your gate, their price falls low.
Are cheap in your cause.

My homeland belongs to no one else, and my soul
My country is not for others! My soul
and my only son's soul are its sacrificial offering!
And the soul of my only son are sacrificed!
