Let me escape the world of cares,

And roam enraptured in the realm of God's throne.

Abandon the deceits of hopes, O soul, for I

Wish to seek a dignified life.

For so long you have fed me hopes,

So I returned, having reaped nothing but dry stubble.

    أقُدْكِ إلى الصِّرَاط المستقيم

    So give me your reins and follow me;

I shall lead you to the straight path.

Ah, O soul, if you grew pure one day,

You would be gentler than the passing breeze,

And fly on feathers of light,

Nor walk upon the earth's surface.

And almost soar alongside the Pleiades,

And take for yourself a tower in the nebula.

And grasp what is not contained

In the pages of books on the various sciences.

Nor would truths be hidden from you, however

Hidden from perception and understanding they might be.

Nor would anything divert you from your hereafter,

Nor would you seek anything but your Lord's pleasure.

Ah, O soul, alas for you! You are not my soul

If you try to harm my adversary!

So draw out rancor from the recesses of my breast,

And be tender toward loved ones and foes.

And be made of water's bubbles, or of

The fragrance of blossoms, or the radiance of the stars.

When war breaks out over food,

Then set the food aside, and fast.

Let me live by my spirit alone,

For bodies are fated to perish.

Love every living being; do not confine

Your love to those who have a handsome face.

When, O soul, will you show no pride

In the great [fortune] you have gained?

When shall I find you paying no heed

To whatever grave calamity befalls you?

The universe around you is dark and glowering,

Yet you smile, revealing a string of pearls?

By your Lord, how many cups of wine have you drunk—

Diluted with water—and others of hellfire?

Were sorrow and joy, then, not merely

Like phantoms of clouds and cloudbanks?

And every pleasure fades, while there remains

Eternal delight in the abode of bliss.

    When calamities darken, seek illumination

By God's light in the pitch-black night.

And persevere, if you would have God as your treasure,

In piety, and never turn away from it.

And do not listen to the whisper of wishes,

Or else you will live in abiding distress.

And Paradise's sweet-flowing water is wine enough for you,

And a bevy of houris is company enough for you!

And how can a wicked drinking companion compare with houris,

Or the milk of vines with the wine of eternity?

To God I turned with all my heart,

And I ask Him for [happiness] for all.

I asked God to grant the wealthy an increase

In blessings, and the destitute ease.

I asked God to wipe disease away entirely,

So no eyes might fall upon anyone sick.

I asked God for freedom for the captive,

And a father's and a mother's tenderness for the orphan.

I asked God for a world at peace,

Where the lion lives beside the male ostrich.

And were I not well aware of my station,

I would have pleaded with God for the people of Hell,

And said to Him, 'Do You consign people to fire,

Though You have named Yourself the Merciful?'
