It draws lines in the earth with order and precision,

As though it were a brush in an artist's hand.

    فإِن نما زرعُها، ازدانت بألوان

    It draws lines in the earth, but does not color it;

For if its crops grow, it is adorned with colors.

    Those lines have been engraved

On the earth's page, with the plough, by two oxen.

I saw geometry in the field after ploughing,

That rests on neither proposition nor proof.

Enough for the farmer, even if he has not attended school,

Is the knowledge and understanding found on farms.

How beautiful the earth is, as the plough composes it

As a poem with scansion and meters!

It moves, and a hand behind it guides it,

Like a ship whose rudder is in a captain's hand.

It never churns the earth without increasing its yield

    Twofold—so marvel at this destroyer-builder!

It has a weapon that, when it cleaves the earth, reveals

Within it treasures of rubies and coral.

Without it, the earth's depths would not yield their bounty,

Nor would a gatherer harvest fruit from its back.
