Is that, then, my fate, and that my end?

Mark out the resting places, and bury my hopes.

Do not deceive me with hopes and talk of them.

That was indeed in days gone by.

And indeed I grew weary of Egypt when I found it

A grave for genius, and a stage for the ignorant.

A land whose fool clothed himself in silk,

While the man of letters walked there without a robe.

I saw the door to livelihood there standing open,

Except to me—its locks were firmly fastened.

If you wish to live in Egypt, do not be

One with a living conscience; you will live free of care.

And kneel there before every authority,

Even if it has been bestowed upon a statue.

And gain the favor of a man of influence; you will live in his shade,

Or live without influence or wealth.

Leave luxury to those who, for its sake, bowed

Their heads—what have I to do with luxury?

God knows: had I wished, I would have attained it,

But my honor—the water of my face—is precious to me.
