تُرىI wonder هلwhether أسوقI offer إليكto you العزَاءَcondolences؟
تُرى هل أسوق إليك العزَاءَ؟
وكيفand how يعزيconsoles حزينٌa grieving person حزيناa grieving person؟
وكيف يعزي حزينٌ حزينا؟
I wonder, shall I offer you condolences?
Shall I offer you solace?
And how can one grieving person console another?
But how can a sorrowful one console another sorrowful?
إذاif ماemphatic particle ألمَّbefalls بجبريلَupon Jibril خطبٌa calamity
إذا ما ألمَّ بجبريلَ خطبٌ
فإِنthen indeed لجبريلَfor Jibril عقلاًreason وديناand faith
فإِن لجبريلَ عقلاً ودينا
If a calamity befalls Jibril,
If Gabriel is struck by calamity,
then surely Jibril has reason and faith.
Gabriel has intellect and faith.
وهلand whether كنتyou were ترجوyou hope for خلودَimmortality أخيكَyour brother
وهل كنت ترجو خلودَ أخيكَ
ولوْand even if أنهthat he كانhe was روحًاa spirit أميناtrustworthy؟
ولوْ أنه كان روحًا أمينا؟
And were you hoping your brother would live forever,
Did you hope for your brother's immortality
even if he were a trustworthy spirit?
Even if he was a righteous soul?
إذاif نحنwe فيin إثرthe wake of كلُevery عزيزٍa loved one
إذا نحن في إثر كلُ عزيزٍ
بكيْناwe wept، قضيناwe spent الحياةlife أنيناin lamentation
بكيْنا، قضينا الحياة أنينا
If we, after each loved one's passing,
When a loved one departs,
wept, we would spend our lives in lamentation.
We weep, spending life lamenting.
