لمdid not أدْرِI know ماwhat كنْهُthe essence of السعادةhappiness فيin الصباyouth
لم أدْرِ ما كنْهُ السعادة في الصبا
فإذاand behold بهاthere it was موقورةٌabundant أسبابُهاits sources
فإذا بها موقورةٌ أسبابُها
I did not know the essence of happiness in youth;
In youth I did not grasp what happiness is
yet there it was, its sources abundant.
Yet causes for it were abundant everywhere
حتىuntil إذاwhen أصبحتُI came to أُدْركunderstand كنههاits essence
حتى إذا أصبحتُ أُدْرك كنهها
سَلَبَsnatched away السعادةَhappiness منfrom يديmy hand سلاَّبهاits plunderer
سَلَبَ السعادةَ من يدي سلاَّبها
Until, when I came to grasp its essence,
Until when I grew up and understood its essence
its plunderer snatched happiness from my hand.
The robber of joy snatched it from my hands
