A miser whose stinginess is instinctive.

He has coffee without coffee beans.

ولكن «عزيزًا» برهن على كرمه

But Aziz proved his generosity,

So he slaughtered a rooster and another rooster for the poet.

فقال:

أقسمتُ لم تكُ، يا عزيزُ، مقصِّرًا

So he said:

I swear, Aziz, you were not remiss;

بل كنتَ مثلي في السخاءِ وأكثرا

بل كنتَ مثلي في السخاءِ وأكثرا

لكنَّ بُخلك لا يزول بدعوةٍ

لكنَّ بُخلك لا يزول بدعوةٍ

Indeed, you were as generous as I—and more.

But your stinginess will not vanish with one invitation;

يا صاح، بل لا بدَّ أن تتكرَّرا

يا صاح، بل لا بدَّ أن تتكرَّرا

يُحلِّيها بمِلحٍ إنجليزي

يُحلِّيها بمِلحٍ إنجليزي

My friend, no—it must be repeated.

He sweetens it with Epsom salt.
