    ولكن بلِينا نحن، وَهْي كما هيا

    By your life, they have not become timeworn ruins;

rather, we have worn away, while they remain unchanged.

Haunts we watered with the water of our youth,

and they gave us a pure spring of learning to drink.

    فهل ثَمَّ أشياخي بها ولدَاتِيا؟

    They remain lofty, their summits soaring;

but are my teachers and my peers still there?

At their memory, my very life almost melts,

and my heart leaps out from between my ribs!

Peace upon that haven in Milij,

where I memorized the seven short, oft-repeated verses.

Peace upon Tanta and its institute, where

I composed rhyming verses before reaching puberty.

Peace upon Dar al-Qada and its people,

and a dwelling of learning now deserted.

They buried it alive fifty years ago,

and my heart's deep wound is still bleeding.

Peace upon Dar al-Ulum and its days—

how far beyond hope that those days should return!

Haunts from whose rooms I scooped up learning,

and where I lodged a portion of my youth.

I went there each day, at evening and at dawn,

to learning thirsty, from learning quenched.

    خليليَّ، رُدَّا مِرْقمي، وكتابيا

    My worldly concern was my book and my pen;

my two friends, return my pen and my book.

When living was unclouded and life was easy,

as though in our world we were safe from the nights.

Our world was adorned with boundless hopes—

how lovely the world, how sweet those hopes!

And when you vied in poetry and its composition,

and we explored its arts of form and meaning.

We embroidered it, now dignified and refined,

now with jests, and now with satires.

We fashioned it into a patriotic anthem

to embolden a coward and awaken a sleeper.

We recited it as praises for the devoted,

    and elegies for departed leaders.

When we were unarmed, it was our ammunition,

    with which we repelled the army that came invading;

and a fire whose blaze scorched the occupier,

and a keen sword above the heads of rebels.

A time that passed in merriment and play—

but was I then carefree and content?

    فأصبحت من علاَّتِي اليومَ شاكيا!

    I complained then without an ailment;

today I complain of my many ailments!

    Zuhayr complained of eighty years,

yet I have complained since I reached eight!

I swear, were I returned to youth,

my lamenting there would be nothing but songs.

We shed tears for times gone by,

whose virtues we once counted as faults.

And what sweetness has a life whose people feel

its pleasure only once it has become the past?

I see images of the past that terrify me when

I sleep, and invade me when I am awake.

If only I could live for this day alone,

and my yesterday could be erased from my life!

Yesterday's joys, whenever I recall them,

draw more tears than what brought me sorrow!

So do not turn a page of my life for me,

even if written in musk, intensely scented and fragrant.

Weary in this world is one whose sensitivity is keen

and who is given a mind alert to events.

Where are my peers today? Has separation flung

them to the farthest reaches of the two Easts?

In every east and west, have they come

to suffer what I now suffer?

Do they endure a temple's hair, shining white,

that has made the face of life black and dark?

Peace upon those of them who live, and mercy

upon those now dwelling in the darkness of the grave!

Upon every grave among my loved ones' graves,

may a cloud of forgiveness stream in pouring rain.

My two friends, who will grant me a daily vigil

at every grave, bareheaded and kneeling?

And can my standing there ease my burning grief

for them? Can my tears lighten what I bear?

How can I live on after my companions, now that

gray hair has shrouded my head? How can I live on?

How can I live on, when my stooping over a staff

reminds me of death, should I forget?

I walked the earth at a gentle pace, as though

my dignity forbade me to be seen running.

By my life, there is no dignity in it; it is only

weakness—without it, I would outstrip my shadow.

I strengthened my two legs, grown slack,

with a third through which my blood has never flowed.

If it ails, my limbs do not suffer fever,

nor do I give it a serum to ward off disease.

How far is God's handiwork from a great tree's branch,

held in my right hand, withered and without feeling?

Ah, many a day it spread its shade,

and was finely sensitive, green and growing.

My two friends, walking has worn out my leg; so break

my staff, and restore my leg's strength to me.

Ask those who sped their mounts toward the celestial spheres:

have they found no cure for an ailing leg?

Have they found no serum to remove gray hair?

Have they found no physician to treat it?

If on earth they cannot dispel its afflictions,

why do they roam the brilliant stars?

How can a man lay claim to knowledge and reason

while the evil in human life remains unknown?

By your life, no happiness has been bestowed on me

by my wealth, nor has poverty debased my condition.

The world divides us into wealth and poverty,

yet we share its pleasures equally.

Many a prince has wished he were a commoner,

and many a wealthy man has envied a beggar.

A songstress moves the crowds with her voice,

though she carries tragedies between her ribs.

Freeborn women in secluded chambers envy her,

while she envies slave girls in certain chambers.

I leafed through my days, but my eye found

no line in their lexicon diminishing my worth.

I care nothing for death's assault, having

    lived high-minded, refusing humiliation.

I held myself above things that would not disgrace me,

knowing I might be going too far.

What harm did wearing a threadbare garment do me,

if it was free of any blemish that defiles?

If hatred fills people's hearts, I

still carry a heart clear of hatred.

What have I to do with hidden hatred, harboring it

in my breast? I have never known enemies.

My soul's forbearance has left me no detractor,

even if this forgiveness emboldens his excesses.

I have not forgiven out of abasement; rather,

one like me forgives from pride, rising above.

I turn away from those I do not wish to meet,

but avoidance never reaches mutual loathing.

What made me spurn a crust of bread was that

I found strife and mutual destruction all around it.

Because of the world's savagery toward the wealth-hungry,

I wished to spend my life hungry.

My two friends, how long this solace in hopes?

Leave me; I have come to know my place.

Enough for me is the success I have attained,

and the failure I have encountered.

How can I aspire, now my crown has turned gray?

My provisions and my water suffice me in this world.

The sum of my words: I ask God for nearness

and pardon I hope for on my day of reckoning.

    فياليت شِعْري: بعدها ما ورائيا؟

    I have known my life, its misery and its bliss;

would that I knew what lies beyond it!

Would that I knew, when my death draws near,

whether my grave will receive me kindly or ill!

    أَأَزعم أنِّي ما اقْتَرَفْت معاصيا؟

    My two friends, I do not declare myself innocent;

can I claim that I have committed no sins?

Do not bury my sin in my grave; bury

my prayers and my fasting with me inside it.

Yet if you bury my sin with me, perhaps

God will pardon one who hoped for pardon.

Your despair of heaven's pardon is a sin

worse than the sin you have committed.

Should I despair of heaven's pardon, when at times

I have found a son of Eve on earth forgiving?

Perhaps the God of the Throne will accept my repentance

and hear my prayer in the Sacred House!

I called to Him as I sought refuge at the Corner, saying:

Your mercy when I invoke You; at Your service when You call!

At the curtain I let loose the torrent of my tears,

though my tears had never flowed amid calamities!

But for Salih, I would not have performed tamattuʿ,

nor circled the House seven times, nor made the ritual walk.

May God reward Salih on my behalf; sufficient is He

as a rewarder of good deeds, a giver of recompense!
