And someone asked: How do you fare amid ordeals?

I said: We have long been close companions.

You were created for me, and I was created for them,

before either you or I existed.

If a smile appears upon my lips,

it complains to God of estrangement in its homeland.

Band together, O calamities, and rage!

My timber has not softened, even as you assail me.

    come between eyelids and slumber.

a day of mine if it is free of sorrow.

Though the heat of cares may melt another,

the heat of cares polishes me.

How often my soul has brimmed with certainty when

my cares increased and my grief overflowed within me!

Care burnishes souls when they rust,

and care provides exercise for the body.

    كلاَّ، ولا نَعمةٌ بلا ثمن

    By God, no affliction comes without recompense;

no indeed, nor any blessing without a price.

How many a boon has brought harm, and how much harm

holds a boon hidden in its folds!

Let people never see me complaining,

    for only the weak complain.

the patience of a noble man fit to bear them.

even if they scatter the wits of the keen-witted.

as though he were walking without ears.

The dignity of kings adorns him, despite

    dry fare and coarse clothing.

His old garment complains of wear, yet

not a speck of grime sullies it.

How little life and precious things matter, so long as

    honor remains unviolated!
