Is that, then, my fate, and that my end?

Mark out the resting places, and bury my hopes.

    Do not deceive me with hopes and talk of them;

That was in days gone by.

And I grew weary of Egypt when I found it

The grave of genius and the stage of the ignorant.

A land whose ignoramus robed himself in silk,

While the man of letters walked there without a robe.

I saw the door to livelihood standing open there,

But not to me—it was tightly locked.

If you wish to live in Egypt, do not have

A living conscience; then you will live free of care.

And bow down there before every authority,

Even if it has been bestowed upon a statue.

And find a man of influence; you will live in his shade,

Or live without influence and without wealth.

Leave luxury to those who lowered for its sake

Their heads—what have luxury and I in common?

God knows: had I wished, I would have attained it,

But my honor is precious to me.
