    ولكن بلِينا نحن، وَهْي كما هيا

    By your life, they have not become timeworn ruins;

rather, we have worn away, while they remain unchanged.

Abodes we watered with the water of our youth,

and they gave us a clear spring of knowledge to drink.

    فهل ثَمَّ أشياخي بها ولدَاتِيا؟

    They still stand lofty, their summits soaring;

are my teachers and my peers still there?

At their memory, my last spark of life almost melts,

and my heart leaps out from between my ribs!

Peace upon that haven in Milij,

where I memorized the seven short, oft-repeated verses.

Peace upon Tanta and its institute, where

    I composed rhymes before puberty.

Peace upon Dar al-Qada and its people,

and upon a home of learning now deserted.

They buried it alive fifty years ago,

and my heart remains deeply wounded and bleeding.

Peace upon Dar al-Ulum and its days,

and how impossible that those days should return again!

Abodes from whose rooms I drew knowledge,

and where I deposited a portion of my youth.

Each day I went to them, morning and evening,

thirsting as I went to knowledge, quenched as I left it.

My worldly concern was my book and my pen.

My two friends, give me back my pen and my book,

when living was untroubled and life was easy,

as though in our world we were safe from the nights.

    فما أجملَ الدنيا، وأَحْلى الأمانيا!!

    Vast hopes adorned our world;

how beautiful the world, how sweet those hopes!

And when there was rivalry in poetry and its composition,

and we explored its varied arts in form and meaning.

We fashioned it now dignified and refined,

now as jests, now as satires.

And we composed it as a patriotic anthem

that stirred a coward and awakened a sleeper.

And we recited it as praises for the devoted,

    and elegies for departed leaders.

It was our ammunition when we were unarmed,

    with which we repelled the army that came invading;

and a fire whose scorching heat the occupier suffered,

and a keen sword over the heads of rebels.

A time that passed in merriment and play—

but was I carefree and content then?

    فأصبحت من علاَّتِي اليومَ شاكيا!

    I used to complain then without an ailment;

today I have become a complainer from my ailments!

    Zuhayr complained of eighty years,

and I have complained since I reached eight!

I swear, if I were returned to youth,

my lamentation then would be nothing but songs.

We wept tears from our eyes for times gone by,

whose merits we had counted faults.

What good is a life whose people do not feel

its sweetness until it has become the past?

I see images of the past that terrify me when

I sleep, and invade me when I am awake.

Would that I could live for my day alone,

and that there were someone to erase yesterday from my life!

What pleased me in the past, when recalled,

draws more tears from my eyes than what grieved me!

So do not turn a page of my life for me,

even if written in musk, richly scented and fragrant.

Weary in his world is one whose feelings are keen,

and who is endowed with a mind alert to events.

Where are my peers today? Has separation cast

them to the farthest reaches of the two easts?

And have they, in every east and west,

come to suffer what I now suffer?

Do they endure hair at the temple, white and gleaming,

that has made life's face pitch-black and dark?

Peace upon those among them who still live, and mercy

upon those who now lie in the darkness of the grave!

Over every grave among my loved ones' graves,

may a cloud of forgiveness drift, pouring down.

My two friends, who will grant me a daily vigil

at every grave, bareheaded and kneeling?

Does my standing there ease my burning grief

for them? And do my tears lighten what afflicts me?

How can I live on after my companions, and after

gray hair has shrouded my head? How can I live on?

How can I live on when my bending over the cane

reminds me of death, should I forget?

I walked slowly over the earth, as though

my dignity would not let me be seen running.

Yet, by my life, there is no dignity in me; it is only

infirmity—without it, I would outstrip my own shadow.

I reinforced my two legs, which had grown slack,

with a third in which my blood has never flowed.

When it ailed, my limbs suffered no fever,

and I gave it no serum to ward off illness.

What comparison is there between God's handiwork and a great tree's branch,

held by my right hand, insensate and withered?

Ah, many a day it was luxuriant,

and finely sensitive, green and growing.

My two friends, walking has wearied my leg, so break

my cane, and restore the firmness of my leg.

Ask those who urged their mounts toward the heavens:

have they found a cure for an ailing leg?

Have they found a serum to remove gray hair?

Have they found a physician to treat it?

If on earth they cannot lift its suffering,

then why do they roam among the glittering stars?

How can a person claim knowledge and reason,

while the bane of human life remains hidden?

By your life, no happiness was bestowed on me

by my wealth, nor did poverty worsen my lot.

The world divides us into wealth and want,

yet we share its pleasures equally.

And many a prince has wished he were a commoner,

and many a wealthy man has envied one in good health.

A woman singer moves the crowds with her voice,

while carrying tragedies within her ribs.

Freeborn women in secluded chambers envy her,

and she envies slave girls in certain chambers.

I leafed through my days, and my eye found no

line in their lexicon that diminished my worth.

So I care nothing for death's onslaught, since

I have lived with a fastidious soul, refusing humiliation.

I held myself above things that would not disgrace me,

and I know I may be going too far.

What harm did it do me to wear a worn-out garment,

if it was free of any flaw that might defile it?

If rancor fills people's breasts, then I

bear a breast clear of rancor.

What have I to do with hidden rancor, harboring it

in my breast? I have never known enemies.

My soul's tolerance has left me no detractor,

even if this generosity makes him persist all the more.

I have not been forgiving out of abasement; rather,

one like me forgives from pride and loftiness.

I turn away from those I do not wish to meet,

but turning away does not amount to mutual hatred.

What made me shun a crust of bread was that I

found conflict around it and mutual destruction.

And from the world's frenzy over its ravenous hunger for wealth,

I wished I might pass my life hungry.

My two friends, how long must I console myself with hopes?

Leave me be; I have learned my place.

Enough for me is the success I have attained,

and the failure I have encountered.

What ambition can I have after the parting of my hair has grayed?

My provisions and my water are enough for me in this world.

The sum of my words: I ask God for nearness,

and for pardon I hope for on my day of reckoning.

    فياليت شِعْري: بعدها ما ورائيا؟

    I have known my life, its misery and its bliss;

would that I knew what lies beyond it for me!

Would that I knew, when my death draws near:

will my grave receive me well or ill?

    أَأَزعم أنِّي ما اقْتَرَفْت معاصيا؟

    My two friends, I do not declare myself innocent;

can I claim that I have committed no sins?

Do not bury my sins in my grave; instead bury

my prayers with me inside it, and my fasting.

But if you bury my sins with me, perhaps

God will pardon one who hoped for pardon.

Your despair of heaven's pardon is a sin

graver than the sin you have committed.

Should I despair of heaven's pardon, when perhaps

I have found a forgiving son of Eve on earth?

Perhaps the Lord of the Throne will accept my repentance

and hear my supplication in the Sacred House!

I called upon Him when I sought refuge at the Corner, saying:

Your mercy when I call You; at Your service when You call me!

I let the torrent of my tears fall beside the curtain,

though my tears had not flowed in misfortune!

But for Salih, I would not have made the tamattu‘ pilgrimage,

nor circled the House seven times, nor performed the ritual walk.

May God reward Salih on my behalf; He suffices

as the giver of reward and recompense for good deeds!
