I clothed people in the brocade of my praise,

Yet I spent the night darning my threadbare cloak.

Alas for the houses of verse

    I build—but in the air!

Do I compose a thousand verses each day,

And after all that, live in rented quarters?

For if living in a house of verse were pleasant,

Then I would live in the loftiest building.

Then I would fill the Nile's bank with houses,

And you would see not a handspan of open space there.

And I would shelter widows and orphans,

And leave no homeless wanderer out in the open.

Nor would I seize the tenants' property,

Even if they were all unable to pay.

Then I would own neighborhoods in Egypt,

Whose houses butt against the heights of heaven.

I would roam among them, house after house,

So my summer would be here, and here my winter.

But no dwelling in a house of verse

Is pleasant, even if Abu al-Ala built it.

Oh, who will buy my verses

For a hut built of clay and water?

For clay is no nobler than my heart,

And water is no dearer than my blood.
