    أسماؤهمُ رُتبٌ علياءُ للرُّتبِ

    Among humankind are youths as lofty as shooting stars;

    Their names are ranks—the loftiest of ranks.

    Taha! And from your name's two letters comes a song

    That evokes all the meanings of glory and ancestral honor.

    لكنَّ محضَ اسمه يطغى على اللقب

    One like you is not exalted by a title;

    But his name alone overshadows the title.

    Two letters fell lightly on the ears and were imprinted

    On hearts, and shook the East with rapture.

    While others strive toward goals, seeking them,

    The goals themselves have hastened after you in pursuit.

    تعيشُ فيه القوافي عيش مُغترب

    O you who uplift slighted literature in an age

    When rhymes live the life of an exile;

    And you who awaken the spirit in apostate bodies

    That believe in nothing but sustenance and gold.

    Today every writer, with his craft,

    Is content—and how wretched the literary profession once was!

    Ḍād takes pride, O Taha, when it recalls

    The bond of kinship that unites you both.

    Indeed, when nations put forward their case

    And speak eloquently, Taha is the Arabs' argument.
