God be your help: you neither complain nor grumble.

Your heart overflows, yet your jaw is bridled!

and the measure's oil spills over when the measure is full.

glass vessels shattered by the touch of the east wind.

I see fortunes allotted in Cairo.

and a mute has shaken the timbers of the pulpits!

I stayed in Cairo, ill-starred and motionless,

as still as its pyramids and al-Muqattam.

I stood in place, never stirring, while the sole of my foot

swelled upon thorns from long journeys by night.

I am like a wheel spinning upon itself:

its course grows longer, yet it never advances.

Others may have kin and marriage ties; I

am alone in Cairo, with neither kinsman nor in-law.

I am not one whom the eye could overlook,

but the people feigned blindness to me—or went blind.

at a gate, as though silence were encamped there?

a stranger to them in feeling and in spirit.

They say, “Its meadows are green and lush.”

I said, “Granted; I am no sheep put out to graze.”

Easy, now! I dwell in a wasteland

where one may pray for mercy upon the living.

I have tired there of life in one single color:

my home there remains my home, my friends the very same.

A life like the surface of water, and the water stagnant:

I am neither happy nor in pain.

I seek nothing but a life of depth,

one that delights me, so I am content, or distresses me, so I resent it.

A life like the sea's depths when the sea surges,

where storms resound and thunder crashes.

A life with earnestness and play, with contentment

and discontent; it has two flavors: honey and bitter colocynth.

Who will tell the Daughter of al-Mu'izz that I have

a heart that hovers over her like birds?

And that for seven years gone by I have held fast

to the pledge, though a lovesick lover may betray his vows?

If I am far from Cairo, it is enough for me that I

make pilgrimage to her each year and enter ritual consecration.

By your life, I have been saddled with boys,

to whom I go each day, evening and morning.

    ونبنيهمو، لكننا نتهدَّم

    Little ones, whom we nurture with minds like their own;

we build them up, but we ourselves crumble.

have I played the child's part before them.

Chapters we began, and will repeat,

over and over—a repeated tune grows tiresome.

For anyone whose heart pities the tormented,

the teacher is the one most deserving of pity!

walking with a slate and stylus in my right hand.

with one right of his lost and another infringed.

and calls at people's homes while the people sleep.

my spacious breast is constricted by them, yet I conceal them.

If only I had closed my eyelid over the mote,

and taught my soul some of what it does not know!

Had my soul obeyed me, I would have lent it

to abasement; I would not have lost while others profited.

kept my dignity unspent when they gave theirs away.

I did not sing love songs to the generous and their bounty,

while others are in love with them, not with budding-breasted maidens.

I would be cheated even if I became Caesar,

and a benefactor had ringed my neck with favors.
