Here I am, here I am! Neither weary nor slack.

How sweet the voice! How poignant its melody!

I heard it with my heart, not with my ears!

Diversion, while others dallied with the tavern's daughter!

I seek refuge in Him from everyone who flaunts favors.

Until You bestow forgiveness upon my sin.

So long as You embrace me in forgiveness, it is the same.

All the Arab lands are my homelands.

A cave in the land of God's Messenger is more restful to me

Than a pavilion raised in a garden's shade.

Why do we erect domes over the dead?

Two handspans in the depths of the earth suffice for the buried!

How many obscure people among the living sought

High standing at a buried person's expense!

Do not seek glory in your dead one's funeral procession,

Or in extravagance over a grave and shrouds.

Woe to me if I am a stranger in the second world!

And wandering without shelter, and shelter me?

Did He not find me given to ignorance and teach me?

And needy, without means, and enrich me?

Ugly be it, even were it Solomon's world!

Here I am, Lord, from my heart and my inmost feelings.

Before You I have sought the intercession of him whose intercession is hoped for,

Lord, if my scales are light on the Day of Gathering.
