عطفتَ وأنتَ ذو الحسب النبيل

عطفتَ وأنتَ ذو الحسب النبيل

على الشُّعراء في شخص الوكيل

على الشُّعراء في شخص الوكيل

You showed kindness, you of noble lineage,

You have shown kindness, O noble one

to the poets in the person of al-Wakil.

To the poets in the person of the deputy

لقد كرَّمت أصغرهم مقامًا

لقد كرَّمت أصغرهم مقامًا

لتُظهر للورى قدر الفحول

لتُظهر للورى قدر الفحول

You have indeed honored the least of them in standing,

You have honored the least of them

to show humankind the worth of the master poets.

To show the people the worth of the chivalrous

جميلٌ ما أتيت به، ولكن

جميلٌ ما أتيت به، ولكن

جميلُك ليس في شخصٍ جميل

جميلُك ليس في شخصٍ جميل

What you have done is good, and yet

Beautiful is what you have done

your good deed has not gone to a good man.

But your beauty is not in a beautiful person
