أَبا عَمروٍ مَتى تَقضي اللَيالي
بِلُقياكُمfor a meeting with you (plural) وَهُنَّand they قَصَصنَthey clipped رِيشيmy feathers
بِلُقياكُم وَهُنَّ قَصَصنَ رِيشي
O Abu Amr, when will the nights decree
O Abu Amr, when will the nights end
a meeting with you, though they have clipped my feathers?
with me seeing you all, while they have plucked my feathers?
أَبَتrefused نَفسيmy soul هَوىًlove إِلّاexcept شَريشاSharish
أَبَت نَفسي هَوىً إِلّا شَريشا
وَياand oh بُعدَremoteness الجَزيرَةِal-Jazira (the island) مِنfrom شَريشِSharish
وَيا بُعدَ الجَزيرَةِ مِن شَريشِ
My soul has refused any love but Sharish.
My soul refused any love but Sharisha’s,
And oh, how far al-Jazira is from Sharish!
and O, how far is the island from Sharisha!
