Locks of hair shine after darkness,

To announce that death will come.

So whoever has done good does still more good,

And the wrongdoer abandons evil deeds.

Ah, O gray hair descending upon my beard,

Woe to you! Indeed, I disown your radiance.

You see science's miracles come in succession—will I see

My youth shine after my hair has turned gray?

Spare me modern medicine and its discoveries,

For I hasten on my way, while it is slow.

Such is medicine: a giant when it comes to wounds,

But in the face of gray hair, it is puny.
