ياO أَيُّهاyou المُتعِبُone who wearies بزلfull-grown الجِمالthe camels
وَطالبand seeker of الحاجاتِneeds مِنfrom ذيone possessed of النَوالbounty
O you who wear out full-grown camels,
And seek what you need from one endowed with bounty,
لاdo not تَحسَبَنَّever suppose المَوتَdeath مَوتَthe death of البِلىdecay
فَإِنَّماfor only المَوتُdeath سُؤالُbegging from الرِجالmen
Do not think death is the death of decay;
For death is nothing but begging from men.
كِلاهُماboth of them مَوتٌdeath وَلَكِنَّbut ذاthis
أَشَدُّharsher مِنthan ذاكَthat لِذُلِّbecause of the humiliation of السُؤالbegging
Both are death, but this
Is harsher than that, because of the humiliation of begging.
نَهيمُwe are infatuated بِالدُنياwith this world وَنَلهوand we amuse ourselves بِهاwith it
وَإِنَّماand only الدُنياthis world كَفَيِّlike the shade of الظِلالshadows
We are infatuated with this world and amuse ourselves with it,
Yet this world is only like the shade of shadows.
بَيناwhile تَرىyou see الفَيءَthe shade عَلىin حالِهِits state
مُعتَدِلاًupright إِذاsuddenly مالَit slanted بَعدَafter اِعتِدالbeing upright
While you see the shade as it stands,
Upright, it suddenly slants after standing straight.
كَذَلِكَso too الدُنياthis world وَتَصريفُهاand its vicissitudes
تَميلُit sways بِالإِنسانِwith a person حالاًone state فَحالthen another
So too this world and its vicissitudes
Sway a person from one state to the next.
