هِيَit is الدُنياthe world فَلاso let not يَغرُركَdeceive you مِنهاof it
هِيَ الدُنيا فَلا يَغرُركَ مِنها
مَخايِلَalluring appearances تَستَفِزُّunsettle ذَويthose possessing العُقولِintellects
مَخايِلَ تَستَفِزُّ ذَوي العُقولِ
It is the world: do not be deceived by its
This is the life, so do not be deceived
alluring appearances that unsettle the wise.
By its illusions that excite the minds
أَقَلُّthe least of قَليلِهاits scant amount يَكفيكَsuffices you مِنهاof it
أَقَلُّ قَليلِها يَكفيكَ مِنها
وَلَكِنand yet لَستَyou are not تَقنَعُare content بِالقَليلِwith little
وَلَكِن لَستَ تَقنَعُ بِالقَليلِ
The merest pittance of it is enough for you,
The least of its little is enough for you
and yet you are not content with little.
Yet you are not satisfied with little
تُشيدُyou erect buildings وَتَبتَنيand you build فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday
تُشيدُ وَتَبتَني في كُلِّ يَومٍ
وَأَنتَwhile you عَلىengaged in التَجَهُّزِpreparation لِلرَحيلِfor departure
وَأَنتَ عَلى التَجَهُّزِ لِلرَحيلِ
You erect buildings and build, day after day,
You build and construct every day
while you are preparing to depart.
While you prepare to depart
وَمَنand who هَذاthis one عَلىthrough الأَيّامِthe days تَبقىremain
وَمَن هَذا عَلى الأَيّامِ تَبقى
مَضارِبُهُhis tents بِمَدرَجَةِin the path of السُيولِthe torrents
مَضارِبُهُ بِمَدرَجَةِ السُيولِ
And who is there who, through the days, can keep
And who remains in this life
his tents standing in the path of torrents?
With his dwellings on the path of floods
