وَإِنand if لَمdoes not يُعطِgive قالَhe says أَبىrefused القَضاءُfate
If he gives you anything, he gives sparingly;
When he gives a little, he gives grudgingly
and if he does not give, he says, "Fate refused."
Yet says, when he withholds, that fate has so decreed.
يُبَخِّلُhe calls miserly رَبَّهُhis Lord سَفَهاًfoolishly وَظُلماًand unjustly
وَيَعذِرُand he excuses نَفسَهُhimself فيماin whatever يَشاءُhe wishes
He calls his Lord miserly, foolishly and unjustly,
In ignorance and wrong, he does his Lord deny,
and excuses himself in whatever he wishes.
Contriving poor excuses for his greed.
تَنَقَّلَhe turned away عَنfrom فعالِdeeds الخَيرِgoodness جَهلاًin ignorance
مَخافَةَfor fear أَنthat يَضُرَّmight cause harm بِهِto him العَناءُtoil
He turned away from good deeds in ignorance,
From good deeds turns away through foolishness,
for fear that toil might harm him.
Lest hardship or fatigue his rest impede.
