وَبَعضُ الناسِ يَلبَسُهُ مَجانَه
He became a Sufi, then ignorantly took pride in wool.
He wore Sufi garb, foolishly feigning piety,
And some people wear it out of shameless frivolity.
While some men don it hypocritically.

He shows you lowliness and conceals pride.
They show humility yet nurse arrogance;
And pride is not akin to lowliness.
True arrogance is not in humble semblance.

وَما مَعنى التَصَنُّعِ لِلأَمانَه
He put on an act so he would be called trustworthy.
He pretended integrity to be called “Trustworthy,”
And what has pretense to do with trustworthiness?
Yet why pretend if one holds trust sincerely?

And he did not seek God through it, but
God willed it not, but he willed the path
He sought through it the path to treachery.
To betrayal, wearing faith like a mask.
