الحِرصُgreed عَونٌan aid لِلزَمانِto time عَلىagainst الفَتىthe young man
الحِرصُ عَونٌ لِلزَمانِ عَلى الفَتى
وَالصَبرُand patience نِعمَhow excellent العَونُthe aid لِلأَزمانِfor facing the times
وَالصَبرُ نِعمَ العَونُ لِلأَزمانِ
Greed is time's ally against the young man.
Greed aids time in subduing the youth,
And patience is the finest aid in facing the times.
While patience is excellent aid 'gainst tribulations.
لاdo not تَخضَعَنَّever yield فَإِنَّfor indeed دَهرَكَyour fortune إِنif رَأىit sees
لا تَخضَعَنَّ فَإِنَّ دَهرَكَ إِن رَأى
مِنكَfrom you الخُضوعَsubmission أَمَدَّهُit reinforces it بِهَوانِwith humiliation
مِنكَ الخُضوعَ أَمَدَّهُ بِهَوانِ
Do not yield, for if your fortune sees
Submit not, for if your fate sees
submission from you, it adds humiliation to it.
Submission in you, it will stretch your humiliation.
وَإِذاand when رَآكَit sees you وَقَدand already قَصَدتَyou have resolved لِصَرفِهِto face its reversals
وَإِذا رَآكَ وَقَد قَصَدتَ لِصَرفِهِ
بِالصَبرِwith patience لاقىit meets الصَبرَpatience بِالإِذعانِwith surrender
بِالصَبرِ لاقى الصَبرَ بِالإِذعانِ
And when it sees you resolved to face its reversals
And if it sees you steadfastly endure
with patience, it meets patience with surrender.
It meets patience with acquiescence.
