لَمdid not أَبكِI weep مِنbecause of خُبثِthe malice of خِلٍّa close friend
إِلّاexcept that بَكَيتُI wept عَلَيهِfor him
Never have I wept at a close friend's malice
without weeping for him.
وَلَمand did not أَمِلI turn away عَنfrom صَديقِa friend
لِلزُهدِout of disinterest فيماin what لَدَيهِhe has
Nor have I turned away from a friend,
out of disinterest in what he has,
إِلىto سِواهُsomeone other than him فَأَبلوand then I test
إِلّاexcept that رَجعتُI returned إِلَيهِto him
to another and put him to the test,
without returning to him.
بِحِفظِon guarding ماwhat فيis in يَدَيهِhis two hands
Every man is intent
on guarding what is in his hands.
