ذَمَمتُكَI censured you أَوَّلاًat first حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle
بَلَوتُI tested سِواكَothers besides you عادَturned into اللَومُthe blame حَمداpraise
I censured you at first, but when
I tried others, blame turned to praise.
وَلَمand did not أَحمَدكَI praise you مِنfor خَيرٍany goodness وَلَكِنand yet
رَأَيتُI found سِواكَothers besides you شَرّاًworse مِنكَthan you جِدّاvery much
I did not praise you for any goodness, but
I found others far worse than you.
فَعُدتُso I returned إِلَيكَto you مُحتَمِلاًputting up with خَليلاًa friend
لِأَنّيbecause I لَمdid not أَجِدI find مِنfrom ذاكَthat بُدّاan escape
So I returned to you, putting up with you as a friend,
For I found no escape from that—
كَمَجهودٍlike a famished man تَحامىavoided أَكلَeating مَيتٍcarrion
فَلَمّاthen when اِضطُرَّhe was compelled عادَhe returned إِلَيهِto it شَدّاat a run
Like a famished man who shunned eating carrion,
Then, when driven by need, came running back to it.
