لاdo not تُشعِرَنever imbue قَلبَكَyour heart حبَّlove of الغَنىwealth
إِنَّindeed مِنَpart of العِصمَةِprotection أَلّاthat you not تَجِدhave the means
Do not imbue your heart with love of wealth;
for lack of means is a safeguard.
كَمmany a واجِدٍwealthy man أَطلَقَloosed وُجدانُهhis wealth
عِنانَهُhis reins فيin بَعضِsome of ماwhat لَمnot يُرِدhe intended
Many a rich man's wealth has loosed
his reins toward things he did not intend.

And many a wine addict, setting out early for
the sound of a lute and melodious singing,
لَوif لَمnot يَجِدhe found خَمراًwine وَلاnor مُسمِعاًa singer
بَرَّدَcooled بِالماءِwith water غَليلَthe burning thirst of الكَبِدthe liver
had he found neither wine nor a singer,
would have cooled his liver's burning thirst with water.
وَكَمand many a يَدٍfavor لِلفَقرِpoverty's عِندَwith اِمرِئٍa man
طَأطَأَhumbled مِنهُof him الفَقرُpoverty حَتّىuntil اِقتَصَدhe practiced moderation
And how many favors poverty has bestowed on a man
whom poverty humbled until he practiced moderation!
