عَلامَwhy? يَشقىtoils الحَريصُthe covetous man فيin طَلَبِseeking الرِthe [fragment of 'livelihood']
رِزقِlivelihood بِطولِthrough prolonged الرَواحِevening travel وَالدَلَجِand night travel
Why does the covetous man toil in pursuit of
livelihood, with long journeys at evening and by night?
ياO قارِعَknocker at البابِthe door رُبَّmany a مُجتَهِدٍstriver
قَدindeed أَدمَنَpersisted in القَرعthe knocking ثُمَّthen لَمdid not يَلِجِenter
O knocker at the door, many a striver
has persisted in knocking, yet never entered.
وَرُبَّand many a مُستَولِجٍone gaining entry عَلىat مَهَلٍleisure
لَمdid not يَشقَtoil مِنfrom قَرعِهِhis knocking وَلَمand did not يَهِجِgrow agitated
And many a man has gained entry at his leisure,
without wearing himself out knocking or growing agitated.
فَاِطوِso fold عَلىover الهَمِّcare كَشحَthe flank of مُصطَبِرone who patiently endures
فَآخِرُfor the end of الهَمِّcare أَوَّلُthe beginning of الفَرجِrelief
So fold your flank over care like one who patiently endures;
for the end of care is the beginning of relief.
