مَصائِبَهُhis misfortunes قَبلَbefore أَنthat تَنزِلاthey befall
The man of understanding pictures in his mind
his misfortunes before they befall him.
فَإِنso if نَزَلَتthey befell بَغتَةًsuddenly لَمdid not تُرِعهُfrighten him
لِماbecause of what كانَhad been فيin نَفسِهِhis mind مَثَلاan image
So if they strike suddenly, they do not frighten him,
because he had already pictured them in his mind.

فَصَيَّرَso he made آخِرَهُits end أَوَّلاfirst
He sees that sorrow comes to an end,
so he makes its end the beginning.
وَذوand the possessor of الجَهلِignorance يَأمَنُfeels secure in أَيّامَهُhis days
وَيَنسىand forgets مَصارِعَthe deaths of مَنthose who قَدalready خَلاpassed away
And the ignorant man feels secure in his days,
and forgets the deaths of those gone before.

So if the vicissitudes of time take him unawares
with some of its misfortunes, he wails.
وَلَوand if قَدَّمَput first الحَزمَprudence فيin أَمرِهِhis affairs

And had he put prudence first in his affairs,
it would have taught him patience in affliction.
