زَيَّنتَyou adorned بَيتَكَyour house جاهِداًstriving hard وَشَّحتَهُyou embellished it
وَلَعَلَّand perhaps غَيرَكَsomeone other than you صاحِبُowner البَيتِthe house
You adorned your house, striving hard, and embellished it—
You adorned your house with great effort, decking it out,
yet perhaps another will be the owner of the house.
yet perhaps another will be the owner of the house.
وَالمَرءُand a person مُرتَهنٌheld hostage بِسوفَby 'I shall' وَليتَنيand 'if only I'
وَهلاكُهُand his ruin بِالسوفِthrough 'I shall' وَاللَيتِand 'if only'
A person is held captive by “I shall” and “If only I...”
And man is held hostage by 'I shall' and 'if only I...';
and his ruin lies in “someday” and “if only.”
and his ruin lies in 'I shall' and 'if only.'
مَنwhoever كانَlives وَالأَيّامُwhile the days سائِرَةٌmoving onward بِهِwith him
فَكَأَنَّهُso it is as though he قَدalready حَلَّhas arrived بِالمَوتِat death
Whoever is borne onward by the passing days
Whoever lives while the days carry him onward—
is as though he had already alighted at death.
it is as though he has already arrived at death.
لِلَّهِto God دَرُّexcellence (a term of praise) فَتىًa young man يُدَبِّرُmanages أَمرَهُhis affairs
فَغَداso he goes forth in the morning وَراحَand goes forth in the evening مُبادرَhastening to forestall الفَوتِthe loss of opportunity
How admirable the young man who orders his affairs,
God bless the young man who manages his affairs,
going forth morning and evening to act before the chance is lost.
who goes forth morning and evening, hastening before opportunity is lost.
