وَمُنتَصِحٍand a well-wisher يُكَرِّرُkeeps repeating ذِكرَmention of نَشوىNashwa
عَلَىon عَمدٍpurpose لِيَبعَثَto stir ليin me اِكتِئاباdejection
And a well-wisher keeps repeating Nashwa's name,
And an advisor who repeats the mention of anguish
deliberately, to stir dejection in me.
Deliberately to instill in me depression
فَقُلتُso I said وَعدَّand he reckoned ماwhat كانَتshe was تُساويis worth
سَيَحسُبُwill reckon ذاكَthat مَنHe who خَلَقَcreated الحِساباthe reckoning
So I said, as he reckoned what she had been worth:
So I said, he counted not what it was worth
"He who created reckoning will reckon that.
That will be reckoned by Him who reckons all things
عَطِيَّتُهُHis gift إِذاwhen أَعطىHe gives سُرورٌjoy
وَإِنand if أَخَذَHe takes الَّذيwhat أَعطىHe gave أَثاباHe grants reward
His gift, when He gives, is joy;
His gift when he gives is joy
and if He takes back what He gave, He grants reward.
And when He takes back what He gave, it is a reward
فَأَيُّso which النِعمَتَينِof the two blessings أَعَمُّmore far-reaching فَضلاًin bounty
وَأَحمَدُand more praiseworthy فيin عَواقِبِهاits outcomes إِياباreturn
So which of the two blessings is more far-reaching in bounty,
So which of the two blessings is greater grace
and more praiseworthy in the return it ultimately brings?
And in its sequel more praised as requital?
أَنِعمَتُهُis it His blessing الَّتيwhich أَهدَتbestowed سُروراًjoy
أَمor الأُخرىthe other الَّتيwhich أَهدَتbestowed ثَواباreward
Is it His blessing that bestowed joy,
Is it his gift that brought joy?
or the other, which bestowed reward?
Or the other that brought reward?
بَلِrather الأُخرىthe other وَإِنand even though نَزَلَتit came بِكُرهٍagainst one's will
أَحَقُّmore deserving بِشُكرِof the thanks of مَنone who شَكَرَgave thanks اِحتِساباseeking God's reward
Rather, the other, though it came unwelcome,
Nay, the other, though it was received with dislike
is worthier of thanks from one who gives thanks seeking God's reward."
Is more deserving of thanks from one who gives thanks in hope of reward
